Women in Music Industry: a qualitative study on Italian Market

At the SAE Institute in Zurich, public seminar in English with the title “Women in Music Industry: a qualitative study on Italian Market.” The speaker will be Alessandra Micalizzi PhD (SAE Institute Milan) and her seminar wants to be a peer to peer moment where to share the main results of a qualitative study carried out in Italy, with the involvement of women and men that work in the music industry. Starting from their direct experience, we will try to analyse causes and effects of the gender gap at social, cultural and psychological level.

Music is not simply a language or a form of artistic expression; it is part of the wider world of the cultural industry. Reflecting on the gender gap in this particular context implies dealing with its dual role: on the one hand, it is responsible for the spreading and constructing cultural models, including the gendered ones; on the other hand, it presents an organizational context, regulated by specific principles typical of creative fields. Speaker: Alessandra Micalizzi PhD (SAE Institute Milan).

The UNESCO report (Conor, 2021) defined this labour sector as non-standard, as it is characterized by the strong presence of figures who work independently, by few structured realities and by a higher percentage of workers who combine music with other activities. The same report highlights how the gap between women and men in terms of attendance and salary is greater in cultural contexts than in other areas. Moreover, Recent international studies show that female performers represent only 22.5% of the world scene (Smith et al, 2020). If we look at production and song writing, the percentages undergo a significant contraction: the authors are only 12.5% of the international scene and the producers 2.6%.

The research was sponsored by SAE Institute of Milan and led to the realization of two editorial products: a short story for children, aimed at promoting new positive cultural models of women in music; a monography that gathers a theoretical frame and an in-to-depth analysis of the results.
